What to know about large format tiles
Large tiles make rooms feel bigger and are easy to clean because there is less grout. They also ask more of the floor and the tiler.
- Flat substrate: big tiles show any dip or hump, so floors often need levelling first.
- Offset: rectangular tiles are usually laid with a controlled offset, often no more than a third, to reduce lippage.
- Showers: large tiles on a shower floor need careful falls, often with a linear drain. See floor wastes and linear drains.
- Handling: large tiles are heavy and need two people and the right tools.

What counts as a large format tile?
Generally any tile with a side of 600mm or more, such as 600x600mm, 600x1200mm and 200x1200mm planks.
Can large format tiles go in a small bathroom?
Yes. Fewer grout lines can make a small room feel bigger, but expect more cutting around fittings and plan the shower falls carefully.
Why do large tiles need a flat floor?
Any unevenness shows as lippage at the joints. Floors are often levelled before large tiles are laid.
