Tiles by type for Thornbury homes
Thornbury has everything from 1920s Californian bungalows and Edwardian weatherboards to postwar brick homes and new townhouses on High Street and St Georges Road. Here is how each type of tile fits.
Porcelain tiles
Porcelain is dense, hard wearing and absorbs very little water, so it is the safe choice for bathroom floors, showers, kitchens and laundries. Glazed porcelain needs no sealing, which suits busy households.
Floor tiles
For halls, kitchens and bathrooms, matt floor tiles with a suitable slip rating are the place to start. 600x600mm is the everyday size; in a period home, a terrazzo look or mosaic floor respects the age of the house. Older homes often have timber subfloors, which need the right base before tiling.
Wall and subway tiles
300x600mm wall tiles laid vertically lift a low ceiling, while subway tiles in brick bond or stack bond suit bungalow kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. In high ceilinged Edwardian rooms, tiling to about 1200mm with paint above is a classic look.
Mosaic and feature tiles
Hexagon and penny round mosaics are a natural fit for bungalow bathroom floors and follow the fall of a shower to the waste. For a statement behind the vanity or in a niche, browse fishscale, feather and herringbone feature wall tiles. Many are natural marble and need sealing.
Terrazzo, marble, stone and timber looks
Terrazzo looks hide dirt in kitchens and laundries. Marble looks keep narrow bathrooms bright. Stone and concrete looks suit warehouse conversions and townhouses. Timber looks carry the feel of original boards into a wet area.
Large format tiles
Large format tiles such as 600x1200mm give fewer grout lines in new ensuites and rear extensions. They need a very flat floor and careful shower falls. Our large format tiles guide explains what to ask your tiler.
Outdoor tiles and pool surrounds
Thornbury courtyards, decks and side paths need outdoor tiles with a grip finish. Indoor and outdoor ranges let one look run from the kitchen to the courtyard. See outdoor tiles for Thornbury courtyards and the pool tiles and coping guide.
