Choosing floor tiles

A floor tile has to cope with traffic, water, dropped pans and cleaning. Porcelain in a matt or honed finish is the safest all rounder.

  • Slip rating: bathroom and laundry floors need more grip than a dry living area. Check the rating for each room.
  • Size: 600x600mm is the everyday floor size. Large format tiles give fewer grout lines but need a very flat floor. Mosaics suit shower floors.
  • Look: terrazzo and stone looks hide dirt, timber looks bring warmth to wet areas.
  • Subfloor: older homes often have timber floors, which need the right substrate before tiling. Your tiler will check this.

Buying help

What is the best tile for a bathroom floor?

A porcelain tile with a matt or honed finish and a suitable slip rating. Small mosaics work well on shower floors because they follow the fall.

Can I tile over a timber floor?

Often yes, with the right substrate such as fibre cement sheeting fixed over sound joists, and waterproofing in wet areas. Your tiler will check the floor first.

Which floor tiles hide dirt best?

Mid tones with some pattern, such as terrazzo, stone and concrete looks, hide dust and marks better than plain white or black.

How many floor tiles do I need?

Measure the area and add about 10 percent for cuts, more for diagonal layouts. Our free measure does the calculation for you.
