Subway tiles, old and new

The slim rectangular subway tile has been used in kitchens and bathrooms for more than a century. It suits Edwardian homes and Californian bungalows as well as new townhouses, and the laying pattern changes the character completely.

  • Brick bond: each row offset by half a tile. The classic look.
  • Stack bond: tiles lined up in a grid, vertical or horizontal. Modern and calm.
  • Herringbone: a statement pattern for a splashback or feature wall. Allow more for cuts.

Tumbled stone subways have softened edges and natural variation, so expect each tile to differ slightly and plan to seal them. Read our subway tiles guide and the kitchen splashback guide.

What size are subway tiles?

Classic subway tiles are slim rectangles, often around 75x150mm or 75x300mm, and there are many variations. Check the size of each range.

Which grout colour suits subway tiles?

A contrasting grout highlights the pattern; a matching grout gives a softer, more seamless wall.

Do stone subway tiles need sealing?

Yes. Tumbled or honed natural stone should be sealed after installation and resealed from time to time.

Can subway tiles go in a shower?

Yes, on walls, provided the wet area is waterproofed correctly behind the tiles.
