Choosing outdoor tiles
Outdoor tiles need more grip than indoor floors, a colour that hides dirt and leaves, and a solid, well drained base. Many porcelain ranges come in an indoor matt and an outdoor grip finish so one look can run from the kitchen to the courtyard. See indoor and outdoor tiles.
- Slip rating: outdoor and wet barefoot areas such as pool surrounds generally need higher ratings. Confirm the rating for your site with your builder or certifier.
- Falls and drainage: the slab should fall away from the house so water does not pool.
- Pools: read our pool tiles and coping guide before you choose.

Buying help
What slip rating do outdoor tiles need?
Outdoor areas generally need higher ratings than indoor floors, and wet barefoot areas such as pool surrounds higher again. Ask your builder or certifier to confirm the rating for your site.
Can I use the same tile inside and out?
Yes, with ranges that offer an indoor finish and a matching outdoor grip finish.
Can outdoor tiles go around a pool?
Some can, if they have a suitable slip rating for wet barefoot areas. Pool coping and waterline tiles have their own requirements, so read our pool tiles guide and check with your pool builder.
Do outdoor tiles need sealing?
Porcelain usually does not. Natural stone used outside usually does, especially near salt water pools.
