How to Measure Your Bathroom Before Choosing Your Tiles
Choosing new bathroom tiles is exciting, but before you can work out how many tiles you need — and how much they may cost — you need to know the approximate size of your bathroom.
If you already have your bathroom measurements, bringing them with you when you visit Porcelana Tiles can help us provide a more direct tile quote when you choose your tiles.
You don't need to be a builder or have professional measuring equipment. With a tape measure, a notepad and a few minutes, you can get the basic measurements we need.
Not confident measuring your bathroom yourself? That's completely fine. Our team can also assist with measuring your bathroom as part of your renovation consultation.
What You Need to Measure Your Bathroom
Before you start, grab:
- A tape measure
- Pen and paper, or your phone
- A calculator
- A simple sketch of your bathroom
- A second person to help hold the tape measure, if possible
You don't need to draw your bathroom perfectly. A simple floor plan showing the walls, doors, windows, shower, vanity, toilet and bath is enough to help you keep track of your measurements.
Step 1: Measure the Length and Width of Your Bathroom Floor
Start by measuring the overall floor area.
Measure the length of the bathroom from one wall to the opposite wall.
Then measure the width from one side to the other.
Write both measurements down.
For example:
Bathroom length: 2.4m
Bathroom width: 1.8m
To calculate the approximate floor area:
2.4m × 1.8m = 4.32m²
This gives you the approximate floor area of your bathroom.
What if your bathroom isn't a simple rectangle?
Some bathrooms have sections that aren't perfectly square or rectangular.
If this is the case, divide the bathroom into smaller rectangles and measure each section separately.
For example:
- Section A: 2m × 1.5m = 3m²
- Section B: 1m × 0.8m = 0.8m²
Then add them together:
3m² + 0.8m² = 3.8m²
If you're unsure, don't worry. Bring your measurements and our team can help you work through them.
Step 2: Measure the Wall Height
If you're planning to tile the bathroom walls, you'll also need to know the wall height.
Measure from the finished floor up to the ceiling.
For example:
Wall height: 2.4m
If you're only tiling part of the wall, measure to the height you want the tiles to finish.
For example, you may want:
- Full-height wall tiles
- Tiles to approximately 1.2m high
- Tiles to 1.5m high
- Full-height tiles in the shower and a lower tile height elsewhere
If you're not sure which option is right for your bathroom, our team can help you discuss your options when you visit the showroom.
Step 3: Measure Each Wall
Don't assume every wall is the same length.
Measure each wall individually and write the measurements on your sketch.
For example:
Wall A: 2.4m
Wall B: 1.8m
Wall C: 2.4m
Wall D: 1.8m
If your bathroom has a different layout, measure each individual wall.
This is particularly important for bathrooms with:
- Niches
- Recessed areas
- Separate shower areas
- Partial walls
- Different ceiling heights
- Angled walls
- Built-in baths
Step 4: Measure the Shower Area
If you're selecting tiles for your shower, measure the shower walls separately.
Measure:
Shower width: ___ m
Shower depth: ___ m
Shower height: ___ m
If the shower has a niche, window or other opening, make a note of it.
A simple sketch can be extremely helpful here.
Step 5: Measure Doors and Windows
If you're calculating the total wall area for tiles, note any areas that won't be tiled.
Measure the approximate size of:
- Doors
- Windows
- Large openings
- Existing niches
- Other areas where tiles won't be installed
For example:
Window: 1.2m × 0.6m = 0.72m²
This information can help when calculating the approximate amount of wall tile required.
Step 6: Measure Around the Vanity, Bath and Toilet
You don't necessarily need to measure every individual fixture in detail, but it's helpful to note where they are located.
On your sketch, mark:
- Vanity
- Toilet
- Bath
- Shower
- Door
- Windows
- Niches
- Any unusual areas
This gives our team a better understanding of the bathroom layout when you're selecting your tiles.
Step 7: Take Photos of Your Bathroom
Photos can be just as helpful as measurements.
Before visiting our showroom, take several photos showing:
- The entire bathroom
- Each wall
- The shower
- Vanity
- Toilet
- Bath
- Windows
- Door
- Floor
- Any unusual areas or features
If possible, take the photos from different corners of the room.
You can bring the measurements and photos with you when choosing your tiles.
Step 8: Bring Your Measurements When Choosing Your Tiles
Once you have your measurements, bring them with you when you visit Porcelana Tiles.
When you've selected the tile you're interested in, we can use the measurements you've provided to help work out the approximate quantity required and provide a more direct tile quote.
This can make the tile selection process easier because you can get a better idea of the quantity and cost while you're choosing your tiles.
Remember to Allow for Wastage
When purchasing tiles, you generally need to allow for additional tiles beyond the exact calculated area.
Extra tiles can account for:
- Cuts
- Breakages
- Pattern matching
- Installation requirements
- Future replacements
The amount of additional tile required can vary depending on the tile size, layout and installation pattern.
Our team can help you determine an appropriate quantity based on your measurements and chosen tile.
