Frameless shower screens: glass, hinges, brackets and handles

Meir glass to glass shower door hinge in champagne

Frameless glass is the most popular choice for showers in renovated bathrooms. It keeps the room open, shows off your tiles and is easier to clean than a framed screen. The glass is held by small pieces of hardware, and those pieces are a chance to match the screen to your tapware.

Common screen layouts

  • Fixed panel: a single glass panel with an open entry. The simplest and most open option, suited to walk in showers with enough space.
  • Panel and door: a fixed panel with a hinged door. Keeps more water in and suits smaller showers.
  • Corner screen: two panels meeting at a corner with a door on one side.
  • Over bath panel: a short fixed panel on a bath with a shower over it.

The hardware

Hinges

Hinges hold the door. Glass to wall hinges fix the door to the tiled wall. Glass to glass hinges join the door to a fixed panel. Hinges are rated for a range of glass thickness and door weight, so your glazier will match them to the glass.

Brackets and clamps

Brackets fix a panel to the wall or floor, or join two panels at an angle. A support bar or stabiliser arm keeps a tall fixed panel rigid.

Handles and knobs

A handle or knob on the door is the part you touch every day. Choose a style that feels comfortable and suits your tapware shapes.

Matching finishes

Matching hinges and brackets to your shower, tapware and accessories makes the bathroom look finished. Chrome hardware disappears against glass, while matte black or brushed gold becomes a feature. Our tapware finishes guide explains each option.

Planning before tiling

  • Wall framing: hinges and brackets fix into the wall, so there needs to be solid backing behind the tiles.
  • Floor falls: the floor should fall to the waste so water does not pool at the screen. A linear drain along the wall can allow a level entry.
  • Tile layout: plan the screen position so it does not land awkwardly across a feature tile or niche.

Glass care

Squeegee the glass after each shower to prevent water spots and soap build up. Clean hardware with warm water and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that can damage finishes. Our finish care guide covers brushed and PVD finishes.

Fixed panel or door?

A fixed panel suits a shower that is long enough for water to stay inside without a door. It has fewer moving parts and is easier to clean. A door suits a compact shower where water would otherwise splash out, but needs space to swing open clear of the vanity and toilet. Your glazier can advise on the best layout for your room.

Small bathrooms

In a small bathroom, a single fixed panel keeps the room open. Clear glass with minimal hardware makes the space feel larger than frosted or framed screens. See our small bathroom ideas for more.

Ask your glazier about glass coatings that help water bead and run off, which can make cleaning easier.

Who installs the screen

Shower screens are measured and installed by a glazier after tiling is complete. If you would like help coordinating trades, our qualified trades can quote installation for your renovation as a paid service. Visit our Reservoir or Geelong showroom to see hardware finishes side by side.
