Where ceramic tiles shine
Ceramic tiles are lighter and easier to cut than porcelain, which makes them a practical choice for walls, splashbacks and shower walls. Gloss ceramics bounce light around small bathrooms, and handmade looks add character to period homes.
- Walls: most ceramic tiles are made for walls. For floors, check the rating or choose porcelain.
- Splashbacks: see our kitchen splashback guide and subway tiles.
- Grout: a contrasting grout shows the pattern, a matching grout calms it. See the grout guide.

Buying help
Can ceramic tiles go on the floor?
Some can, but many ceramic tiles are wall only. For bathroom floors we usually suggest porcelain with a suitable slip rating.
Are ceramic tiles waterproof?
The glazed face resists water, but the tiles are part of a system. Waterproofing behind and under the tiles is what keeps a wet area sound.
Why choose ceramic over porcelain for walls?
Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut around niches and fittings, and comes in many gloss and handmade looks.
