Tiles by type for Geelong homes

Greater Geelong has a bit of everything: weatherboard cottages in Geelong West and Newtown, postwar brick homes in Belmont, Bell Park and Norlane, hillside houses in Highton, new estates in Armstrong Creek, Lara and Mount Duneed, and beach houses from Torquay to Ocean Grove. Here is how each type of tile fits.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain is dense, tough and absorbs very little water, so it is the safe choice for bathroom floors, showers, kitchens, laundries and outdoor areas. Glazed porcelain does not need sealing, which suits busy family homes and holiday rentals alike.

Floor tiles

For bathrooms, kitchens, halls and living areas, start with matt floor tiles with a slip rating that suits the room. 600x600mm is the everyday size for bathrooms, while 600x1200mm suits open plan living in newer homes. If your home has a timber subfloor, as many older Geelong houses do, the floor needs the right sheeting before it is tiled.

Wall, subway and feature tiles

300x600mm wall tiles laid vertically make a low ceiling feel taller. Subway tiles suit cottage kitchens, laundries and splashbacks, and feature tiles in fluted, fishscale or herringbone designs give a vanity wall or shower niche some personality without taking over the room.

Marble, stone, terrazzo and timber looks

Marble look tiles keep small bathrooms bright. Stone look and travertine look porcelain bring a warm, natural feel that suits coastal and country homes. Terrazzo looks hide crumbs and sand in kitchens and laundries, and timber look tiles carry the feel of floorboards into a wet area or an alfresco.

Mosaic tiles

Hexagon, penny round and finger mosaics follow the fall of a shower floor to the waste, and they suit the small bathrooms found in many older Geelong homes. Natural stone mosaics need sealing; glazed porcelain mosaics do not.

Outdoor tiles, pavers and pool surrounds

Geelong gets cold southerly changes, hot northerly days and plenty of wind, so outdoor tiles need to cope with all of it. Choose outdoor tiles with a grip finish, or 20mm pavers laid on sand or pedestals for alfrescos and pool surrounds. Indoor and outdoor matching ranges let one look run from the kitchen through to the deck. See the pool tiles range and our guide to outdoor tiles and slip ratings.

Large format tiles

Large format tiles give fewer grout lines in new ensuites and open plan living. They need a very flat floor and careful shower falls, so read our large format tiles guide before you brief your tiler.

Bathroom fittings to match your tiles

Because everything is in one showroom, you can hold a tile sample against a vanity door or tapware finish before you commit.

For opening hours, parking and what to bring, see the Geelong showroom page.

Matching tiles to Geelong house styles

  • Weatherboard cottages and period homes: gloss white or soft colour wall tiles, a hexagon or penny round floor, and chrome or brushed nickel tapware. Read bathrooms for older homes in Geelong West, Newtown and Belmont.
  • Postwar brick homes: keep the layout and refresh with 600x600mm matt porcelain floors, lighter walls and a wall hung vanity.
  • New estate homes: large format porcelain, one tile through the floor and shower, and an upgraded vanity and tapware package. See upgrading a new home bathroom.
  • Coastal homes: matt stone and travertine looks, textured outdoor tiles and brushed or PVD finishes that cope with salty air. See tiles for coastal homes.

Geelong tile questions

Where is your tile shop in Geelong?

Our showroom is at 35A Ryrie St, Geelong VIC 3220, in the centre of town. It is open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:30am to 3:00pm, and Sunday by appointment only.

Can I see tiles and bathroom products in one visit?

Yes. Tiles, tapware, vanities, basins, baths, showers, toilets and accessories are all on display, so you can choose the whole room together and check that finishes and colours work side by side.

Can I take tile samples home?

Yes. Take samples home to see them in your own light before you order. Colours can look quite different in a south facing bathroom compared with a bright living area.

How long does it take to get tiles in Geelong?

Tiles are call to order. Most orders are ready for free pickup from the Geelong showroom in 2 to 4 days, or we deliver to your home or site.

Do you lay tiles and install bathrooms in Geelong?

We can quote installation by our qualified trades as a paid service after a free measure. You can also buy products only and use your own tiler, plumber or builder.

Which tiles suit Geelong outdoor areas and pool surrounds?

Choose a porcelain with an outdoor grip finish and a slip rating that suits the area, such as P4 or P5 for wet outdoor areas, and confirm the rating with your builder. Matt or textured stone looks in mid tones hide dust and leaf litter well.
